Quick one today. Three things caught my attention this week, and two of them affect what I'm buying.
Mega Evolution: Pitch Black lands July 17
The fifth expansion of the Mega Evolution era arrives in two weeks, headlined by Mega Darkrai ex, with Mega Zeraora, Mega Chandelure, and Mega Excadrill filling out the six Mega ex slots in a set of over 115 cards (Dexerto has the rundown). The Pokemon Company also announced rule changes tied to the set this week. Seller take: Darkrai always has an audience, but remember what happened to the last four Mega sets. The alt arts spike on release weekend, then supply floods in. If you're buying singles to hold, the discipline is waiting 30 to 60 days. If you're ripping product, sell the hits fast.
Mega Greninja ex Premium Collection is out today
Today's release is a Premium Collection built around Mega Greninja ex, whose Mortal Shuriken ability places six damage counters by discarding a Water Energy. Greninja boxes historically hold shelf value better than average because the frog has a genuine fanbase, but premium collections are rarely good flips at retail price. I buy these to sell the promo and sealed accessories separately only when the math clears, and it usually doesn't on day one.
The market is splitting, and it's healthy
The clearest trend of 2026 continues: vintage and provably scarce cards keep climbing while modern special art rares shed 20 to 30 percent within two months of release (PokemonPriceTracker tracks this well). Japanese exclusive promos have been on a two-year climb, which anyone reading my import guide already knows. And Rayquaza cards have been ticking up since April ahead of the Mega Rayquaza set coming July 31. That last one is the play I'm watching: historical Rayquaza demand plus a confirmed set date is about as clean a setup as this hobby offers, though by now much of it is priced in.
What I'm doing about all this: holding my vintage Japanese inventory, listing modern hits within a week of pulling them, and keeping powder dry for the Rayquaza set's release-week dip on everything that isn't the chase card.
