Someone paid $16,492,000 for a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator this year, and it still stands as the record for any trading card sale on record, not just Pokemon. Essential Japan's rundown of the five priciest cards on the market right now also lists a 1998 Bronze Trophy Pikachu No.3 Trainer that went for $1,769,000 and a Logan Paul Break 1st Edition Charizard that hit $954,808. Numbers like that make for a fun headline, but they don't tell you much about what's happening at the level where the rest of us actually buy, sell, and ship cards.
The market where the rest of us actually live
Zoom out and the picture is calmer. Pokemon Wizard's market index, which tracks 41,000+ cards across 313 sets, put total market value at $622,610 as of August 4, up 5.3% over the last 30 days but only 0.7% over the last week. That's a market drifting up, not spiking. Ascended Heroes, one of the hottest sets of the year, actually dipped 3.6% this week on that same index, which lines up with what I keep seeing in my own boxes: the initial hype pop on a hot set fades fast once enough product hits the secondary market.
Two products worth knowing about this week
Speaking of Ascended Heroes, Pokemon just announced three tins releasing August 28 at $21.99 each, containing Mega Meganium ex, Mega Feraligatr ex, and Mega Emboar ex promos plus four booster packs, via ScreenRant. Some collectors are grumbling that these exact promos already got distributed through the January Mega Boxes, and they're not wrong, but Ascended Heroes has been near impossible to find on shelves since launch, so more product is more product. If you have been trying to complete that set, this is your shot.
Smaller but worth flagging: the First Partner Illustration Collection Series 3 drops August 7 for $14.99, finishing the trilogy with Hoenn, Kalos, and Paldea starters after Series 1 and 2 covered the rest, per PokeBeach. Each box gets you a booster pack of three Illustration Rare promos, two regular packs, and a sticker sheet. Under fifteen bucks a box, these tend to sell through fast without sitting on shelves long enough to be worth chasing restocks over.
None of this changes how I run things day to day. I have logged over 5,000 sales at this point between noxidtcg on eBay.com and eBay.ca, and the lesson that never stops being true is that the multimillion dollar sales and the fifteen dollar blister boxes are two completely different markets.
