Two days out from Storm Emeralda's Japanese release and the secret rares are already flooding social media, so let's talk about what's actually worth caring about here versus what's just noise.
PokeBeach posted the secret rare reveals yesterday, and the headline piece is the Mega Rayquaza ex Special Illustration Rare, out alongside a Zinnia SIR and a fresh Raikou ex alt art. The set itself releases in Japan this Friday, July 31, with the English version, rebranded Delta Reign, not landing worldwide until November 6. Booster box preorders are already open through the usual import channels, and Samurai Sword Tokyo has them listed at 22,000 to 24,000 yen, which at current exchange puts a box somewhere around 150 to 165 USD before shipping, customs, and whatever Canada Post decides to charge on the way in. I got hit with HST plus a handling fee I wasn't expecting on a Buyee order last year, so budget for that if you're new to importing. It's not optional and it's not small.
Why I'm sitting out release week
My rule hasn't changed since last time I wrote about this set: I don't buy Japanese product in the first 30 to 60 days after release. The last several Mega sets have all followed the same shape, chase cards spike on hype photos and pull videos, then correct hard once the second wave of boxes clears proxy warehouses and actually hits the secondary market. A good illustration on a Rayquaza SIR doesn't break that pattern, it just makes the spike louder.
Rayquaza is having a moment on two platforms at once
The timing is almost funny. The same week Storm Emeralda's secret rares hit Japan, Pokemon TCG Pocket launched its own Rayquaza themed expansion, Ruler of the Skies, going live July 29 with Mega Rayquaza ex as the headline pull. Digital and physical aren't the same market and Pocket doesn't move sealed product prices directly, but when the same Pokemon fronts two separate releases in the same week, it tends to pull casual buyers back into the hobby generally, usually toward whatever's cheap and sitting on a shelf at their local shop rather than a 150 dollar Japanese import box. Worth watching whether that shows up in Rayquaza adjacent English singles over the next few weeks.
None of this changes how I'm running inventory day to day. I'm sitting on just over 5,000 tracked sales at this point between eBay.com and eBay.ca, mostly mixed lots and singles organized in boxes by set, and sell-through on mixed lots holds steady at 50 to 60 percent regardless of which Pokemon is having its moment that week.
What I'm doing about this: skipping Storm Emeralda boxes at release-week pricing, waiting to see how Mega Rayquaza ex singles settle once the set is actually in people's hands instead of just previewed, and not expecting Pocket's launch to move my physical sell-through either way.
